Marche, its history and traditions! The song ALL' ETA' DE QUINDICI ANNI, or, translated into English, AT THE AGE OF FIFTEEN YEARS, has been collected by MARINO CAROTTI on July 12, 1994, when it was presented and sang to him by Rosa Pellegrini (1916-2002) in Montegranale di Jesi (AN).
Video is filmed in fairytale village ‎FratteRosa‬.
The cantastorie are songs, who border between traditional oral literature and folk culture. These were street artists who moved into the streets, telling a story in singing. They were using both ancient stories, but often in a new revision, as they referred to actual facts and contemporary events. The stories became part of the collective cultural heritage of a community.
The storyteller accompanied the cantata with music instruments: mostly it was the guitar, but they also used accordion or the lira in earlier times. They helped with a billboard on which was depicted the story, described in the main scenes. Their work was remunerated with the offerings of the spectators or the sale of sheets, where the story of each song was described. After the '50s, with the invention and spreading of vinyl records, these stories were recorded and sold.
The cantastorie is rooted in such historical traditions as poetry and songs of bards and jesters, minstrels, troubadours or in medieval French, Celtic and Sicilian poetry. Similar traditions are also present in Islamic Indian and African cultures.
In 1994 Marino Carotti started a research of songs and folk traditions of rural culture in the Marche region, recovering and documenting everything what was still possible to find at the end of the century. He traveled the countryside and villages to find informants, especially older people, willing to remember and transmit songs. They had stopped singing or reciting these songs for at least fifty years, and almost always they marveled for Marino’ s interest in those songs.
He was recording the songs in portable cassette recorder, and he managed to record more than a thousand songs. Later he transcribed them, and created collections of ballads, narrative songs, songs for working, songs about migration, war, as well as tongue twisters and songs for children, lullabies, serenades, religious songs, satirical and improvisation, and, of course, love songs.
These are traditions and songs passed down orally until the middle of the last century, who remained only in the memory of a few elderly people still living.
After several years of research, he started to repeat some of these songs in his own shows, accompanied with the classical guitar or the accordion, and he always respects both the melody, as well as the language of the informants.
We are delighted to offer you one of the Marino’s songs for listening and enjoying the feel of the old times.
However, times haven’t changed the human nature and feelings that much and you will certainly recognize some stories!
